Roimata, the teardrop, is important in Maori design. The first designs are said to come from the tears shed during the separation of Ranginui (Sky father) and Papatuanuku (Earthmother). In Maori Mythology, Rangi & Papatuanuku are lovingly embraced. Their children lived in darkness between them. We see drops of rain as tears from Ranginui as he cried for his wife Papatuanuku, who was torn away from him; after their children pushed them apart in an effort to see light and live outside the darkness. Roimata are widely regarded as touchstones in healing and meditation. Roimata carvings are also believed to hold strong connection to the land.
Kahurangi- pounamu is highly translucent and has a vivid shade of green. It is named after the clearness of the sky and is the rarest variety of pounamu.
