A wonderful contemporary Hei Matau (hook) carved from a fantastic piece of rich dark kawakawa pounamu. The unusual design of this Hook makes it a treasured taonga.

Traditionally the main source of food for Māori was from the sea so a fishhook of high quality was a very valuable item. The hook became a symbol of prosperity, abundance, good health, power, authority and respect for the sea and the life within it. It also is said to bring good luck and safe travel across water.
